CINCINNATI - Katie Kiriazoglou scored three goals and handed out five assists leading the University of Cincinnati (5-8) to a 15-9 victory over visiting Jacksonville University (5-10) in non-conference action at Nippert Stadium on Sunday, April 18.
The Bearcats scored the first six goals of the game and never looked back. Kiriazoglou took a pass from MacKenzie Parsons just 16 seconds into the game and scored. Shannon Lynes scored from Kiriazoglou and then Parsons found the back of the net on a free position attempt. Marissa Pierson and Natalie Starvaggi scored back-to-back goals from Kiriazoglou and Laura Simanski scored from Lynes before Jacksonville rattled off three straight goals. Maddie Fink stopped the JU scoring with a goal from Kiriazoglou but the Dolphins responded with two goals. Rachel Mercier scored on a free position attempt and Kiriazoglou scored her second first-half goal with 1:58 remaining. Jacksonville finished the first half scoring with a free position goal with 1:29 left in the period, making the score 9-6.
Lynes started the scoring in the second half on a pass from Starvaggi and Simanski recorded a goal from Lynes with 24:37 on the scoreboard. Starvaggi scored from Ali Mattingly to give the Bearcats a 12-6 advantage. Both Jacksonville and UC scored three goals to end the game with Kiriazoglou, Mercier (from Starvaggi), and Simanski (from Kiriazoglou) each scoring for the Bearcats.
Cincinnati won the draw control battle, 16-10, and scored on two of its three free position attempts. Katherine Russo was outstanding in goal for UC, saving 21.
UC will return to action on Friday, April 18, when Syracuse visits Nippert Stadium for a BIG EAST Conference game that starts at 5 p.m.
