CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati baseball team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but was unable to put any more runs on the board as St. John's University scored seven times in the middle innings to take its BIG EAST Conference series finale, 7-1, over Cincinnati Sunday afternoon at Marge Schott Stadium.
Cincinnati (18-16, 4-8 BIG EAST) singled three times in the first inning, but collected just one hit in the final eight innings, while the St. John's (21-12, 7-5 BIG EAST) used 12 hits to score its seven runs.
Junior Chris Peters collected the first of the three first-inning hits with a single up the middle and then moved up a base on a single through the left side by sophomore Kendal Coleman. With a runner in scoring position, senior Jimmy Jacquot singled through the left side, which plated Peters from second and put UC in front, 1-0.
Junior Nick Johnson kept the Red Storm quiet through three innings giving up just one hit, but St. John's was able to strike in the fourth inning.
The STJ half of the fourth inning got off to an inauspicious start when the lead-off batter reached on a dropped fly ball, allowing the runner to advance to second base. Three consecutive RBI hits followed placing the Red Storm on top, 3-1.
UC was retired in order in fourth, giving St. John's an opportunity to pad its lead in the fifth inning. Four consecutive one-out hits plated the first three runs of the inning and later in the frame, an RBI fielder's choice added another run to lead, extending the margin to 7-1.
The Bearcats were unable to string together another rally against St. John's starter Kyle Hansen after the first inning and UC's only remaining hit came in the eighth inning on a one-out single by sophomore Braden Kline.
UC was retired in order in the ninth giving the Red Storm the 7-1 series-finale victory.
Hansen went 7.1 innings for St. John's, gave up three hits, and struck out 12 to pick up the win.
With the lone RBI in the first inning, Jacquot has now driven in at least one run in eight of UC's last nine contests.
The Bearcats head to Chillicothe, Ohio, on Tuesday, April 20, to take on Ohio University at VA Memorial Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
