CINCINNATI - At the 2010 Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky Women's Sports Association 17th Annual Awards Dinner earlier this week, University of Cincinnati junior outside hitter Stephanie Niemer was named the College Sportswoman of the Year, the organization announced.
Niemer was one of six athletes up for the award, joining Casse Morgan (Northern Kentucky Basketball), Jenna Kramer (Thomas More Soccer), Kimberlee Nemcek (Northern Kentucky Volleyball), Jessica Simpson (Miami (OH) Softball), and Katie Brightwell (Miami [OH] Field Hockey).
Niemer was an American Volleyball Coaches Association Honorable-Mention All-America selection last season after leading the Bearcats to their first BIG EAST Championship game and to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. A first-team all-conference and BIG EAST All-Tournament selection, Niemer became the 11th player in school history to eclipse 500 kills in a season, posting 541 on the campaign. Niemer concluded the season ranking third in the BIG EAST in kills per set (4.19), aces per set (0.41), and points per set (4.88).
Through her junior season, Niemer ranks fourth on UC's career kills per set chart (3.69), fifth in school history in aces (149), eighth in total attempts (3,480), and ninth in kills (1,341).
Niemer became the fourth player in program history to earn all-America honors joining Jessie Nevitt, Laura Lauder, and Julie DuPont, who was a third-team AVCA All-America selection in 2003.
The Bearcats wrap up their final week of spring volleyball this weekend when they host the Cincinnati Volleyball Spring Tournament on Saturday, April 24. The tournament will take place on the first-floor practice gym in the Richard E. Lindner Center on the UC campus.
