CINCINNATI - Laura Simanski scored three goals but the University of Cincinnati (5-10, 0-6 BIG EAST) lacrosse team lost in overtime, 12-11, to the University of Connecticut (9-7, 2-5 BIG EAST) in BIG EAST Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Nippert Stadium.
Connecticut scored the first five goals of the game but the Bearcats maintained their composure, scoring the final three goals of the first half. Marissa Pierson put UC on the scoreboard with a free position goal and Simanski and MacKenzie Parsons each posted unassisted goals.
Cincinnati scored the first two goals of the second half, tying the game at five. Katie Kiriazoglou scored on a pass from Natalie Starvaggi and Ali Mattingly scored a commanding unassisted goal to knot the score. The Huskies scored back-to-back goals, taking a 7-5 lead, but Kiriazoglou scored on a pass from Maddie Fink and Rachel Mercier scored on a free position attempt to tie the score again. A Huskie goal with 11:18 in the second half sparked a two-goal spurt by UC, one from Simanski and another from Parsons. Connecticut scored the next three goals to regain the lead, 11-9. Fink scored on a free position shot with 2:34 to go and Simanski calmly took the ball down the field off a Huskie turnover and scored with 57 seconds remaining in the game.
Neither team was able to score in the first 3-minute period of overtime. Connecticut found the back of the net with 1:10 left in the second overtime period that served as the game-winner.
Katherine Russo has six saves in goal for Cincinnati. UC scored eight second half goals and out-shot the Huskies, 27-18.
Prior to the game Cincinnati honored seniors Jess Kazaks, Patty Kelly, Shannon Lynes, and Jen Mott for their contributions at UC.
The Bearcats will finish the 2010 season on the road with BIG EAST Conference games at Villanova on Friday, April 30, and at Rutgers on Sunday, May 2.
