THE MATCH-UPS
The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team finishes the 2010 season on the road, playing at Villanova on Friday, April 30, at 5:30 p.m. and visiting No. 19 Rutgers on Sunday, May 2, at noon. The Bearcats will look to snap a two-game losing skid and win its first BIG EAST Conference game. Villanova has lost its last five games and Rutgers, which hosts Louisville on Friday, April 30, is coming off a 12-11 overtime victory over No. 12 Notre Dame on April 24.
LAST TIME OUT
Laura Simanski scored three goals but UC lost in overtime, 12-11, to Connecticut in BIG EAST Conference action on Sunday, April 25, at Nippert Stadium. Connecticut scored the first five goals of the game but the Bearcats maintained their composure, scoring the final three goals of the first half. Marissa Pierson put UC on the scoreboard with a free position goal and Simanski and MacKenzie Parsons each posted unassisted goals. Cincinnati scored the first two goals of the second half, tying the game at five. Katie Kiriazoglou scored on a pass from Natalie Starvaggi and Ali Mattingly scored a commanding unassisted goal to knot the score. The Huskies scored back-to-back goals, taking a 7-5 lead, but Kiriazoglou scored on a pass from Maddie Fink and Rachel Mercier scored on a free position attempt to tie the score again. A Huskie goal with 11:18 in the second half sparked a two-goal spurt by UC, one from Simanski and another from Parsons. Connecticut scored the next three goals to regain the lead, 11-9. Fink scored on a free position shot with 2:34 to go and Simanski calmly took the ball down the field off a Huskie turnover and scored with 57 seconds remaining in the game. Neither team was able to score in the first 3-minute period of overtime. Connecticut found the back of the net with 1:10 left in the second overtime period that served as the game-winner. Katherine Russo has six saves in goal for Cincinnati. UC scored eight second half goals and out-shot the Huskies, 27-18.
2010 SENIORS
Prior to UC's game against Connecticut on April 25, Cincinnati honored seniors Jess Kazaks, Patty Kelly, Shannon Lynes, and Jen Mott for their contributions at UC.
VS. OPPONENTS
Villanova is in its first season as a member of the BIG EAST Conference in women's lacrosse. Last season UC defeated the Wildcats at Nippert Stadium, 11-10. UC hosted Rutgers in 2009 in a BIG EAST game and lost, 15-10.
STREAKIN'
Sophomore Laura Simanski had her team-high point-streak of 16 games snapped against No. 11 Syracuse. Simanski recorded a point in every game her freshman year until the Bearcats played Loyola. She started her streak with two goals against Louisville last season and had a point in every 2010 game. MacKenzie Parsons is leading the team with a 6-game point streak that began at No. 14 Georgetown.
CAS SCHOLAR ATHLETE
Senior Patty Kelly was named the College of Applied Science Scholar Athlete of the Month for the month of March. Kelly, a tri-captain, has a 3.60 grade point average in electronic media.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Katherine Russo was named the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week (March 8) after her outstanding performances in the first two games of the season for the Bearcats. Russo's honor is the second time that a Cincinnati player has earned a weekly conference honor after the first week of play in a season. Last season, Laura Simanski was named the BIG EAST's Offensive Player of the Week after the opening week of play for UC.
BIG EAST HONOR ROLL
Katherine Russo recorded 34 saves, 21 against Jacksonville, and was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll as a result of her efforts (April 19). Laura Simanski totaled 12 points, including 11 goals in a 2-1 road trip; had five points, including four goals in a 12-7 win at St. Mary's (Calif.) and earned BIG EAST Honor Roll plaudit (March 29). Katie Kiriazoglou recorded a school-record eight points and a school-record five assists in UC's victory over Presbyterian and earned BIG EAST Honor Roll status as a result (March 15). Katie Liberatore was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll after the first week of play this season (March 8). She finished the week with seven points, including five goals against Duquesne.
MISSING MARSHALL
The Bearcats lost one starter from the 2009 season, senior Lindsey Marshall. Marshall finished her career as the school leader in career goals (64), career caused turnovers (39), career ground balls (59) and career points (69).
KELLY KELLY
Senior Patty Kelly is one of the 2010 team captains and her sister, junior Lauren Kelly, became the school leader in career ground balls in UC's win over Presbyterian. She now has 64 career ground balls, passing Lindsey Marshall's previous record of 59 ground balls but she is currently ranked third in UC history after Paige Stratton surpassed her career total of 64. Stratton has 76 career ground balls. Lauren Kelly needs to cause seven turnovers to become the school leader in career caused turnovers.
SMOOTH SIMANSKI
Sophomore attack Laura Simanski became the school's leader in career goals against Saint Mary's. She has 36 goals in 2010 and 92 career goals, passing Lindsey Marshall's previous record of 64 career goals. She leads the team with 40 points on the year.
DROPPIN' DIMES
Freshman attack Katie Kiriazoglou has handed out five assists in a game -- a UC record -- three times this season and has a team-high 22 assists. She is the school leader in career assists, passing the previous school record of 11, against Fresno State.
TURNING THE PAIGE
Junior Paige Stratton has a team-high 36 ground balls this season, surpassing teammate Lauren Kelly as the career leader at UC with 76. Stratton plays defense and has scored one goal, starting every game in 2010.
STAR SHINING
Junior Natalie Starvaggi recorded three unassisted goals against Louisville and has 14 goals and 11 assists on the year. The tri-captain has 31 ground balls this season, pushing her career total to 65, which places second in the school record book.
MAC ATTACK
Sophomore MacKenzie Parsons has scored 12 times this season and has picked up 25 ground balls and caused a team-high 16 turnovers.
ALI
Sophomore attack Ali Mattingly, the tallest player on UC's squad, has a team-high 29 draw controls. She has recorded a point in the last three games and has scored eight goals on 12 shots and has handed out four assists.
