CINCINNATI - On the opening day of the 2010 BIG EAST Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Gettler Stadium, the first five events of the men's decathlon and the first four events of the women's heptathlon were contested and Cincinnati's Boudine Bouma stands in 10th in the heptathlon, while Brandon Smith and Caleb Gaus currently sit in 11th and 14th place, respectively, in the men's decathlon after Day 1 of action.

Smith and Gaus opened the festivities with times of 11.64 and 11.87 in the 100m to collect 723 points and 677 points, respectively, before using leaps of 20' 1-1/4" and 20' 11" in the long jump.

In the shot put, Gaus placed sixth with a throw of 40' 2-3/4", moving his three-event total to 1,969, while Smith ended the third event with a score of 1,810.

In the final two events of the day in the decathlon, Gaus cleared 6' 3/4" in the high jump and clocked in at 56.71 in the 400m to finish the day with 3,171 points, while Smith registered a mark of 5' 10-1/2" in the high jump and 50.61 in the 400m to conclude his day with 3,216 points.

Bouma began her day with 748 points in the 110m hurdles clocking in at 15.73, before finishing fifth in the shot put with a toss of 36' 4-3/4" to add 601 points. After a placing 11th in the high jump, Bouma closed her day with a solid showing of 26.36 in the 200m.

Bouma finished Day 1 of the championships with 2,793 points and is in 10th place. The final three events of the women's heptathlon contested on Saturday will be the long jump, the javelin, and the 800m. The final five decathlon events will be the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1,500m run.

The athletes who finish in the Top 8 in the decathlon and the heptathlon score points for their teams and Bouma is just 27 points behind the eighth-place position, while Smith is 124 points behind the eighth-place competitor in the decathlon.

Day 2 of the BIG EAST Conference Championships are set to begin at 9 a.m.
