PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Needing a win in the final game of its series against No. 22 Pittsburgh, the University of Cincinnati baseball team called upon freshman Andrew Strenge and he went 8.0 innings and yielded one unearned run leading the Bearcats to a 3-1 victory and earning him BIG EAST Conference Pitcher of the Week honors, the conference office announced today.
Strenge becomes the first UC pitcher to earn BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week Honors since May 12, 2008, and the first UC freshman to win the weekly honor since Steve Blevins was a two-time Pitcher of the Week selection in his rookie season in 2006.
Against the nationally-ranked Panthers, Strenge yielded eight hits and struck out a career-high nine batters in his eight innings of work to move his record to 6-1 on the season.
In his last two outings against No. 20 UConn and No. 22 Pitt, Strenge has tossed 17.0 innings, given up three unearned runs, and struck out 15 without relinquishing a walk en route to picking up two victories. Against the Huskies on May 9, Strenge tossed a complete game in his first career start.
The Yardley, Pa., native dropped his season ERA to 1.82 in 39.2 innings, while his conference-only ERA fell to 0.67. In league-only play, Strenge has struck out 27 and walked one batter in 27.0 innings.
