CLEARWATER, Fla. - At the opening ceremonies of the 2010 BIG EAST Conference Baseball Championships, the University of Cincinnati baseball team had three players earn all-conference accolades in seniors Andrew Burkett, Brian Garman, and Jimmy Jacquot.
All three Bearcats seniors were third-team all-BIG EAST selections and it was the first all-conference selection in each of their careers.
Burkett finished the regular season ranked second in the conference in overall games with 14 saves, while tying Louisville's Neil Holland for the saves lead in conference-only action with nine. Burkett's 14 saves moved him past Shannon Morgan as Cincinnati's single-season saves leader, while his nine saves in league play tied him with Holland as the new single-season BIG EAST saves leader. Burkett pitched 20.1 innings in 22 appearances and posted a 3.10 ERA. The Crystal Lake, Ill., native yielded 15 hits, struck out 28, and walked 11 throughout the campaign.
Garman has been one of Cincinnati's best pitchers throughout the season and finished the regular season with a 4-3 record and a 3.67 ERA, which ranked eighth in the conference. On April 30 against West Virginia, Garman threw his first career complete game against the Mountaineers and struck out a career-high nine batters en route to the win. In 56.1 innings of work, Garman struck out a team-high 62 batters while relinquishing just 17 walks.
Jacquot has been the leading power threat and run producer for UC in 2010 leading the squad with 13 home runs and 49 RBI. He hit .291 in the regular season, a 43-point improvement in batting average from a season ago. Five of Jacquot's 13 round-trippers have come in the eighth inning or later this season and three of those five home runs have either been game-tying or go-ahead four-baggers. In addition to his offensive output, the Swansea, Ill., native has also been an asset behind the plate. Heading into the tournament, Jacquot has thrown out a BIG EAST-best 26 runners attempting to steal and in conference-only play, he led the conference with three pick-offs.
During the final week of the regular season, Jacquot was named BIG EAST Player of the Week after hitting .600 (6-for-10) with four extra-base hits in a three-game sweep over Georgetown. The weekly honor was the first for UC this season.
The Bearcats open the 2010 BIG EAST Baseball Championships versus No. 2 seed Connecticut on Wednesday, May 26, at 1 p.m. at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla. The game can be heard live on XM satellite radio (Channel 203), on Sirius satellite radio (Channel 216), and on www.GoBEARCATS.com.
