CINCINNATI - A pair of University of Cincinnati student-athletes were among 24 winners of the 2009-10 BIG EAST Conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, which recognize academic and athletic achievement as well as community service.
Swimmers Elinore de Jong and Josh Schneider took home the honors for their sports for the second-straight year.
De Jong set multiple school and individual records throughout the season and was one of the team's top point scorers at the BIG EAST Conference Championship. She was named UC's Female Student-Athlete of the Quarter for the 2010 winter quarter.
Schneider won the 2010 NCAA Championship in the 50-meter freestyle becoming Cincinnati's first national champion in swimming since 1946. He earned the Jimmy Nippert Award as UC's Male Student-Athlete of the Year at the annual all-sports banquet.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
