PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Cincinnati men’s cross country team and women’s lacrosse team were two of 25 teams recognized by the BIG EAST Conference today as 2009-10 Team Academic Excellence Award winners, signifying the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport.
The winners were chosen based on the 2009-10 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appears on an institution’s squad list as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
The lacrosse team was honored with the BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award for the second straight year. The Bearcats posted a perfect Academic Progress Report score in 2008 and earned a 3.41 grade point average as a team in the 2009-10 academic year.
In March, the men’s cross country team was one of 135 teams nationally selected to the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team with the 16th-best GPA among the 135 all-academic squads. On the course, the men’s team placed eighth at the 2009 BIG EAST Conference Championships led by sophomore Eric Finan, who placed 24th.
Eleven BIG EAST schools had at least one team honored, with Providence finishing with a conference-best five teams recognized. DePaul and Syracuse had four teams recognized, while Cincinnati, Louisville, Notre Dame and St. John’s had two each. Georgetown, Rutgers, USF and West Virginia all had single teams represented.
