CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team and second-year head coach Jamelle Elliott announced the 2010-11 non-conference schedule on Friday (July 30).
The 12-game slate features eight home games, including the annual Skyline Chili Women's Crosstown Shootout against rival Xavier, and a trip to San Diego for the Maggie Dixon Surf N Slam Classic.
"Eight home games November and December will give our young team a chance to gel and our incoming players a chance to experience college basketball as we prepare for the rigors of the BIG EAST schedule," said Elliott. "The tournament in San Diego will be a great opportunity and experience for our players and the Crosstown Shootout is always a big game for both teams as well as the Cincinnati community and we hope to sell out Fifth Third Arena again this year."
UC opens Elliott's second season on Nov. 6 with an exhibition contest against Northern Kentucky, which made its fifth straight NCAA Division II tournament appearance last season.
The regular-season opener is slated for Nov. 12 against Southwest Baptist on Elementary School Day with a special tip time of 11 a.m. The Bearcats will then welcome North Florida (Nov. 14), Robert Morris (Nov. 21), and Mount St. Mary's (Nov. 23) before facing its first road contest at Valparaiso on Nov. 28.
UC will then renew its rivalry with regional foe Dayton on Dec. 2 at UD Arena before returning to Fifth Third Arena for the annual rivalry game against Xavier on Dec. 5. UC has won two of the last three games against the Musketeers, who are coming off a trip to the 2010 NCAA Elite Eight.
A pair of pre-Christmas games against Wright State (Dec. 18) and Marshall (Dec. 21) end the 2010 portion of the schedule.
Following the holiday break, the Bearcats will travel to southern California for the Maggie Dixon Surf N Slam Classic hosted by San Diego. UC will take on Texas on Dec. 28 and either Hofstra or the host Toreros on Dec. 30.
The Bearcats wrap up non-conference action with another local rival, Miami (OH), on Jan. 2.
The balance of the BIG EAST schedule is expected to be released in September. Although dates are yet to be determined, UC will take on defending national champion Connecticut, DePaul, Marquette, Providence, Rutgers, Seton Hall, and Syracuse in Fifth Third Arena. Road contests include Georgetown, Louisville, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, St. John's, USF, Villanova, and West Virginia.
The 2011 BIG EAST Championship will take place from March 4-8 at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
