CINCINNATI - Third-year head coach Michelle Salmon has named senior Sydney Barker (Roswell, GA/Roswell) and juniors Logan Ballinger (Cincinnati, OH/Seton) and Kay Young (Doylestown, OH/Chippewa) as the women's soccer team captains for the 2010 season.
"Syd (Sydney Barker), Logan and Kay are tremendous leaders who exude what UC soccer is all about," said Salmon. "The leadership that these three possess is vital to our success this season."
Barker, a midfielder, is serving her second season as a captain. She has played in every game during her time at UC after transferring from Alabama in 2008. She has one goal and three assists to her credit.
Ballinger, a redshirt-junior, has played both midfield and defense for the Bearcats. She scored one goal and handed out an assist in 2009 before suffering a season-ending injury.
Young is a workhorse along UC's backline. She has played in 32 games, starting 12 as a true freshman. Last season she handed out an assist against Seton Hall, despite battling nagging injuries during the year.
"We are excited about our upcoming season," Salmon continued. "We are putting the pieces together to have the right mentality and leadership to compete for a BIG EAST championship."
Cincinnati will open the 2010 season with an exhibition match against Ball State at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14 at Gettler Stadium.
