CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati assistant lacrosse coach Lauren Schwarzmann has been selected to represent the U.S. as a member of the senior women's national lacrosse team. The 36-player squad was chosen after a three-day tryout at the University of Maryland and will train for the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup.
A four-year starter and four-time all-conference selection for the Blue Jays at John Hopkins University, Schwarzmann was on the Tewaaraton Trophy (the top individual award in women's lacrosse) watch list in 2008. An all-region selection in 2007 as a midfielder, she was selected to play in the North/South College Senior All-Star game. Schwarzmann finished her Johns Hopkins career with 79 goals, 39 assists, and 118 points, ranking in the Top 10 in school history in all three categories. Schwarzmann has been a part of the U.S. Women's National Team program since her senior season in 2007-08.
Schwarzmann is in her third year as UC's assistant lacrosse coach under head coach Lellie Swords after playing for and coaching with Swords at JHU.
Tryouts took place July 30 - Aug. 1 and the 36-member team was selected on the last day by the coaching staff with Schwarzmann being selected to play as a midfielder for the U.S. women's team. Although training for the FIL World Championships is their main goal, the team will also participate in annual activities such as the U.S. Lacrosse Champion Challenge, the U.S. Lacrosse Stars and Stripes Weekend, and a series of U.S. National Team Clinics. Head Coach for the 2010-2011 U.S. women's team, Rick Fried believes this team will be very promising.
"This was the most competitive tryout I've ever been a part of," said Fried. "We think that this is the best team of 36 players for the style and tempo we want to play. This group will comprise the core of the team which will defend the gold medal in 2013."
The location and dates of the 2013 FIL World Championship have not yet been determined by the Federation of International Lacrosse.
