HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Matt Bahner (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) scored and the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team opened its 2010 exhibition season with a 1-1 draw against Northern Kentucky on Friday (Aug. 20) night at the NKU Soccer Field.

NKU opened the scoring with a Jordan Grant header in the third minute of play. Bahner leveled the contest just a minute later off an assist from Christian Myton (Vandalia, Ohio/Chaminade Julienne).

UC had a goal disallowed due to an offsides, but neither team could muster much more offense throughout the final 85 minutes of the contest.

"Overall, we were encouraged by the performance," head coach Hylton Dayes said. "We were able to play a lot of players and got some good fitness work in. We defended pretty well after giving up the early goal."

Joey Barnard (McKinney, Texas/McKinney) made two saves in goal for the Bearcats.

UC held a 14-9 advantage in shots and took seven corners to the Norse's three.

"I thought we needed to move the ball a little quicker to take advantage of the big field," Dayes said. "We still have a lot of work to do before our regular season opener on Sept. 1."

The Bearcats will travel to Evansville on Monday, Aug. 23 for a 6 p.m. contest against the Purple Aces before closing out exhibition play on Friday, Aug. 27, against Cleveland State in Gettler Stadium. The regular season opener is slated for Sept. 1 against regional rival Dayton in Gettler Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
