CINCINNATI - Emily Hebbeler (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) and Sydney Barker (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) each scored a goal, leading the No. 19 University of Cincinnati (4-0-1) women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the College of Charleston (1-3-0) in non-conference action on Friday night at Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats have only been unbeaten in the first five games of the season one other time, in 1980 - the first season of varsity soccer at UC.
Hebbeler's second game-winning goal of the 2010 season came after Katie Buczek (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East) passed to Kendall Loggins (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) who flicked it to Hebbeler on the right side. Hebbeler aimed and fired, drilling the ball past Charleston's keeper on the near side and giving the Bearcats a 1-0 advantage in the 50th minute.
Hebbeler later took a corner kick that soared to the far side of the goal and Barker headed her first goal of 2010 into the opposite corner in the 61st minute.
In the first half UC started quick with Jazmine Rhodes (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Polytechnic) getting an open look at the net in the second minute. The Bearcats spent much of the half on Charleston's side of the field but the Cougars outshot Cincinnati, 6-2. Rachel Barnette (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) had two critical saves in the first half, keeping Charleston off the scoreboard.
The second half the Bearcats rattled off four shots before Hebbeler found the back of the net. Cincinnati dominated, taking 12 shots to the Cougars' seven. Julie Morrissey (Abington, Mass./Tabor Academy) nearly gave UC its third goal when she blasted a shot that CofC's keeper was barely able to swat away. UC took seven corner kicks in the second half, one of which the Cougars countered with 14 minutes left in the match. Barnette calmly saved the dead-on shot and the UC defense cleared the rebound.
Barnette finished with five saves and recorded her third straight shutout victory. The last time a Bearcat goalkeeper had three straight shutouts was in the 2002 season.
The Bearcats host Western Michigan in a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Sept. 5, at Gettler Stadium.
