The Games:

  • The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team looks to stay unbeaten in 2010 when it welcomes Appalachian State and Fordham to Gettler Stadium for the BIG EAST adidas Challenge this weekend.
  • UC will take on Appalachian State on Friday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. Fordham will venture into Gettler Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 12, for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Series History:

  • The Bearcats will play Appalachian State for the first time.
  • UC won its only meeting with Fordham, 7-1, as part of the Harwick Nike Soccer Shootout in Oneonta, N.Y., in 1999.

Story Lines:

  • Head coach Hylton Dayes is in his 10th season at Cincinnati and 20th as a head coach. Dayes holds a 80-73-23 mark at UC and a 176-158-42 overall record. Dayes is the second winningest coach in UC history, behind only Bob Muro, who posted a 114-111-13 mark in 12 seasons on the Bearcats sideline.
  • Junior midfielder Matt Bahner was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 6 after scoring both of UC's goals last week, including the game winner against Dayton on Sept. 1.
  • Senior goalkeeper Matt Williams posted his 12th career shutout against Dayton on Sept. 1. He is tied for sixth on UC's all-time shutout list with Tom Young.
  • The Bearcats roster features players from near and far. Ohio products hold 12 roster spots with eight hailing from the Greater Cincinnati/Dayton area. Seven Bearcats hail from outside the United States, including four from Canada, two from Jamaica, and one from Scotland.

BIG EAST Honors:

  • Matt Bahner was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor roll on Sept. 6 after scoring a pair of goals in a 1-0-1 week for the Bearcats.

Rough Road:

  • The 2010 schedule features matches against three Top 25 teams, including No. 1 Akron.
  • UC will welcome No. 13 Louisville to Gettler Stadium on Oct. 13.
  • The Bearcats will play in Akron's tournament on Sept. 17-19 and will travel to No. 25 St. John's on Oct. 9.

Last Time Out:

  • UC played Detroit to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 5 at Gettler Stadium.
  • Matt Bahner scored his second goal in as many matches in the fifth minute.
  • Mark Konitsch sent a perfect cross into the box, where Bahner buried the header.
  • Konitsch and Branden Stelmak were credited with assists on the goal.
  • Detroit tied it in the 75th minute on a Ya Ya Toure header.
  • The Bearcats held a massive 28-13 advantage in shots, including managing 11 on goal. UC took 10 corners to UDM's four.

Up Next:

  • UC will travel to Akron, Ohio, for a weekend tournament hosted by Akron. The Bearcats will take on Illinois-Chicago on Friday, Sept. 17, at 5 p.m. UC will then battle the No. 1-ranked Zips at 2:30 on Sunday, Sept. 19.
