CHARLESTON, S.C. - The University of Cincinnati volleyball team had its four-match winning streak stopped Friday (Sept. 10) night losing to host College of Charleston, 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23), in the opening round of the Holiday Inn Charleston Riverview Classic in the Carolina First Arena.
In the opening set, the College of Charleston built up a 22-16 lead due to 12 UC attack errors in the set before the Bearcats battled back with five straight points to cut the deficit to one, 22-21. The Cougars then rallied and posted the next three points to take the opening set from Cincinnati.
After the College of Charleston took the second set of the match, 25-22, the Bearcats went into the break looking to regroup and get back in the match. In the third set, both teams fought back and forth as the score mounted to 20-20. From there, UC scored five of the last six points of the set to win the third game and cut the deficit to 2-1. Over that final push, sophomore Becca Refenes posted a pair of kills.
The fourth set started with the College of Charleston taking a commanding 6-1 lead out of the blocks, but UC did not stop fighting as it chipped away at the deficit and finally evened the set at 18-18 and then took leads at 19-18, 20-19, 22-21, and 23-22. The Cougars would not go away and captured the final three points of the set for the win.
Senior outside hitter Stephanie Niemer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) led Cincinnati with 25 kills and 18 digs and posted a .243 hitting percentage. As a team, the Bearcats posted a season-low .162 attack percentage.
Cincinnati (7-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) returns to the court Saturday, September 11 for a doubleheader vs. Oregon State and Auburn at 10:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
