CINCINNATI - Matt Bahner (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) scored his third goal in four matches to lead the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team to a 1-0 win against Fordham on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 12) in Gettler Stadium.
Bahner got the Bearcats (2-0-2) on the board early, as he has done in three of UC's first four matches of the season. Bahner worked a two-man game with Shamar Shelton (Kingston, Jamaica/Lindsey Wilson),before firing a left-footed shot low to he near post past Fordham keeper Ryan Meara. Bahner is the lone Bearcat to score this season and his other two goals came in the sixth minute against Dayton (Sept. 1) and in the fifth minute against Detroit (Sept. 5). Shelton earned his first career assist on the play.
Senior goalkeeper Matt Williams (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) made seven saves to post his third shutout of the season. He holds a 0.22 goals against average and has made 15 saves in four matches.
The Bearcats managed just five shots on goal, but the defense was solid again, keeping Fordham at bay and making the early goal stand up.
The Rams (1-3-0) posted 13 shots, including seven on goal, but were unable to crack the UC defense, which has allowed just one goal thus far in 2010. Williams made a big save on Fordham's best chance in the final minutes of the match as Julian Nagel won the ball in the box following a long throw-in. Nagel's left-footed poke was snatched by Williams with 15 seconds to play and UC was on its way.
The Bearcats are undefeated through the first four matches for the second straight season. The 2009 squad won its first four contests.
UC will travel to Akron, Ohio, for the Akron Tournament next weekend. The Bearcats will take on Illinois-Chicago on Friday, Sept. 17, at Lee Jackson field. UC will then battle the No. 1 Zips on Sunday, Sept. 19.
