LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 16/23 University of Louisville (7-0-0, 1-0-0) women's soccer team defeated the University of Cincinnati (5-2-1, 0-1-0) on Thursday night at Cardinal Park, earning a 3-1 BIG EAST Conference victory.
Cincinnati's Jazmine Rhodes (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Polytechnic) took a shot in the first two minutes of the match with Kendall Loggins (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) and Logan Ballinger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) adding shots with less than 10 minutes gone. The Bearcats set the tone offensively until the 18 minute mark when UC committed five fouls over a seven minute span. The Cardinals reacted with four corner kicks and three shots before finding the back of the net in the 44th minute.
The second half both teams took six shots with Louisville scoring in the 81st minute. Loggins put UC on the scoreboard in the 83rd minute after finding her way through the UofL defense and hitting the lower left corner from nine yards out. The Cardinals put the game out of reach after scoring on a penalty kick in the 88th minute.
"I'm proud of the way our team played today," said head coach Michelle Salmon. "Obviously, we are disappointed with the loss but we truly showed a tremendous fight tonight. We dealt with a ton of adversity and if I learned one thing about our team tonight it's that we are going to be a heck of a team this year."
Rachel Barnette (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) finished with seven saves in goal for the Bearcats. UC was called for 15 fouls, compared to UofL's nine, and the Cardinals took seven corner kicks to UC's four.
Cincinnati will play next at cross-town rival Xavier on Sunday, Sept. 19, in a 1 p.m. non-conference match.
