SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - The University of Cincinnati men's golf team finished 15th at the season-opening Cardinal Intercollegiate on Tuesday (Sept. 21) at Louisville's Cardinal Club.
UC shot rounds of 305-300-297=902 to finish 12 shots ahead of Morehead State (298-302-314=914) for 15th place.
Senior Joe Kastelic (Newton, N.C./Fred T. Foard) led the Bearcats, finishing tied for 51st with a three-round total of 224, rebounding after a first-round 79 to post 72 and 73 over the final two rounds.
Sophomores Zack Bates (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) and David Tepe (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) tied for 56th with rounds of 78-77-71=226 and 73-74-79=226, respectively.
Fellow sophomore Andrew Desmarais (Union, Ky./Ryle) was one shot behind his classmates, finishing with rounds of 75-77-75=227 for a 61st-place finish.
Miami (OH) (289-279-289=857) won the team title by three shots over Illinois State (280-291-289=860). Marshall was third with rounds of 282-284-296=862 and host Louisville finished fourth at 285-285-293=863.
Marshall's Aaron Boggs shot 70-69-71=210 to win medalist honors, edging out Jeff Karlsson (70-72-69=211) and Chad Wilson (67-74-71=212) of Kennesaw State.
The Bearcats are next in action on Sept. 27-28 at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic at Notre Dame.
