SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Zack Bates (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) placed ninth to lead the University of Cincinnati men's golf team to a 12th-place finish at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic on Tuesday (Sept. 28) at the Warren Golf Course.
Bates fired rounds of 72-72-69=213, one stroke behind Iowa's Vince India and Tom Usher of host Notre Dame, who tied for seventh.
Andrew Desmarais (Union, Ky./Ryle) finished 22nd with rounds of 74-75-70=219. Joe Kastelic (Newton, N.C./Fred T. Foard) and David Tepe (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) placed 65th and 67th, respectively. Kastelic carded rounds of 79-77-74=230, while Tepe shot 78-78-76=232.
The Bearcats posted a team total of 303-302-289=894, four shots better than Gonzaga to place 12th. College of Charleston (299-299-295=893, 11th) and Georgetown (306-295-290=891, 10th) finished just ahead of UC.
Iowa won the team title with rounds of 289-278-286=853. Notre Dame, playing on its home course, was second (281-286-292=859). San Fransisco's Taylor Travis (68-71-69=208) and Ji Hwan Park (69-71-68=208) tied for the individual title, while leading the Dons to a third-place team finish (286-291-283=860).
UC is next in action on Oct. 4-5 at the Cleveland State Invitational, hosted by the Cleveland State Vikings.
