Postgame Interview with Coach Dayes
CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team played crosstown rival Xavier to a 0-0 draw in double overtime on Wednesday (Sept. 29) evening, at the XU Soccer Complex.
In a game matching the No. 5 and No. 7 defenses in the nation, the Bearcats (3-2-3) posted their fifth shutout of the season through eight matches. UC is unbeaten in its last six matches against the Musketeers (1-2-3).
"I thought we created enough chances to get a goal," head coach Hylton Dayes said. "I thought we tried to carry the game and Xavier did what they have done in all their games - defend."
UC had the best of the scoring opportunities throughout the match, finishing with 18 shots.
Mark Konitsch (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence Senior) sent a cross into the box in the 26th minute and found a wide-open Matt Bahner (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), but his header sailed just over the crossbar.
Bahner had another open header that missed high in the 65th after a throw-in from the far side.
After an injury stoppage with six seconds to play in regulation, a Sam Klosterman (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) throw-in made its way to the head of Zach Patterson, who snapped a shot just wide right as time expired.
The two overtime periods were defensive stalemates as neither team managed a quality chance.
Matt Williams (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) made three saves to record his 16th career shutout, moving into second on UC's all-time shutouts list. He lowered his goals-against average to 0.35, allowing just three goals in eight matches this season.
UC returns to BIG EAST play on Saturday, Oct. 2, when it welcomes Rutgers to Gettler Stadium. The Bearcats and Scarlet Knights are set to kick off at 7 p.m.
