CINCINNATI - Yancy Gates followed his own missed shot and scored the winning basket with two seconds remaining, lifting the University of Cincinnati (12-6, 3-3 BIG EAST) to a 60-58 victory over Notre Dame (14-4, 3-2 BIG EAST) at Fifth Third Arena on Saturday afternoon. Gates recorded his fourth double-double of the year, scoring 11 points and pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds.
Rashad Bishop scored three of his 10 points in the game at the free throw line over the final 4:02, keeping UC in the game. The Bearcats were tied at 58 with 23 seconds and UC called a timeout. Deonta Vaughn, who finished with a team-high 15 points, dribbled to his left, penetrated to draw the defense and lobbed a pass to Gates. Gates caught the pass and tried to tip it in but missed. He tipped in his own rebound with two seconds left on the clock, giving the Bearcats the win.
Notre Dame won the opening tip of the game and went on a 7-0 run, forcing Cincinnati to take a timeout. Vaughn hit one of his three 3-pointers of the game to stop the Irish run and kicked off a 10-2 run for UC, giving the Bearcats a 10-9 advantage with 13:28 on the clock. Notre Dame bounced back with a 7-0 run and extended its lead to seven by the end of the first half, 32-25.
UC began the second half with a 12-3 run, tying the game at 35 on a Vaughn 15-footer in transition, and then UC took the lead with 16:12 to play after Rashad Bishop scored on a fastbreak layup. Neither team led by more than four points the remainder of the game, setting up the final play for Vaughn and Gates.
Lance Stephenson added nine points and five rebounds for UC, which out-rebounded the Irish 50-31. Tim Abromaitis scored a game-high 16 points for the Irish and Luke Harangody scored 14 points on 25 percent shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Cincinnati will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 20, when South Florida visits Fifth Third Arena for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
