CINCINNATI - West Virginia University (6-4-1, 2-1-1 BIG EAST) defeated the University of Cincinnati (6-5-1, 0-4 BIG EAST) women's soccer team on Friday night by a score of 4-0 in BIG EAST Conference action at Gettler Stadium.
West Virginia got on the scoreboard first with when Meghan Lewis blasted a shot that UC's Rachel Barnette (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh) was able to save. WVU's Megan Mischler picked up the rebound and floated a shot that went off the post and Blake Miller drove home in the sixth minute.
The Mountaineers scored again eight minutes later when Bry McCarthy lined up a corner kick and found a dashing Drea Barklage who headed in the second goal for WVU. In the 41st minute the Mountaineers' Bri Rodriguez dribbled down the field, passed to Emily Dillon who served up a cross to Mischler for her third point of the match.
The final WVU goal came in the second half when Blake Miller picked up a loose ball in the penalty box and fired a shot past Ashley Daniels (Cincinnati, Ohio/CHCA), who played in goal for UC in the second half.
WVU controlled the match offensively, holding a 23-13 shot advantage and a 8-2 advantage on corner kicks. Katie Greer (Massapequa, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) and Katie Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline) each had three shots for the Bearcats.
UC will host Pittsburgh on Sunday, Oct. 3, in a 1 p.m. BIG EAST match at Gettler Stadium.
