QUEENS, N.Y. - The No. 22 University of Cincinnati volleyball team picked up its seventh straight win Friday night (Oct. 1) with a dominating 25-18, 25-13, 25-14 victory over St. John's University in Carnesecca Arena. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Niemer and sophomore middle blocker Becca Refenes led the team with 12 kills each, while sophomore middle blocker Jordanne Scott put down 10 kills as the Bearcats hit .372 as a team.
The match opened with back and forth play as neither team could get more than a two-point lead before the match was tied at 16. From there, the Bearcats closed out the set on a 9-2 run, including three straight points by Refenes on two kills and a block. She finished the set tied for the set-high with five kills and a team-high three blocks.
In the second set, the Red Storm kept the match close early but after 5-0 and 4-0 runs by the Bearcats, UC owned a 16-8 lead and did not look back going on to a 25-13 win. Freshman Juliana Behrens had three kills in the set while Scott added three blocks and UC out hit St. John's .360 to .033.
In the third set, the trio of Niemer, Scott and Refenes took over the match and guided UC to the 25-14 victory with five kills apiece.
For the match, UC posted a hitting percentage of .372, its second-highest percentage of the year, and totaled 42 kills. St. John's struggled hitting the ball posting a .053 percentage, including 22 attack errors.
UC senior setter Annie Fesl extended her streak of 17 straight matches with 30 or more assists, posting 34 against the Red Storm. Niemer also led the team with two of the team's five service aces.
The Bearcats (14-3; 3-0 BIG EAST) travel over to Storrs, Conn., to take on Connecticut on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
