CINCINNATI - Julie Morrissey (Abington, Mass./Tabor Academy) scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute leading the University of Cincinnati to a 2-1 victory over visiting Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon at Gettler Stadium. The win was UC's (7-5-1, 1-4-0 BIG EAST) first conference victory while Pittsburgh dropped to 4-8-1 overall and 1-4-0 in BIG EAST play.
"Today was a complete team win," said head coach Michelle Salmon. "We used a new starting lineup and you could just sense the energy. A lot of new names are on the score sheet today with Jazmine Rhodes getting her first goal and Alexis Scott getting her first assist. Julie Morrissey came in and scored the game-winner. It was just a total team effort."
Cincinnati got on the scoreboard first when freshman Jazmine Rhodes (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Polytechnic) connected on her first collegiate goal. Rhodes' goal was assisted by classmates Katie Buczek (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East) and Katie Greer (Massapequa, N.Y./Saint Anthony's). Rhodes slipped past the Pittsburgh defender and fired a low grounder to the far side of the goal in the 12th minute.
The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead into halftime and held the Panthers off until the 68th minute when Ashley Cuba picked up a loose ball of a rebounded shot in the penalty box and tucked the ball between UC's Ashley Daniels (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) and the near post.
Morrissey put the match away for the Bearcats when she took a pass from Alexis Scott (Duluth, Ga./Peachtree Ridge), dribbled right and fired a shot outside of the penalty box into the top right corner of the net. The game-winner was Morrissey's ninth career game-winning goal.
Pittsburgh out-shot UC, 21-12, and held an 11-2 advantage on corner kicks. Daniels recorded her first win in goal this season for the Bearcats and finished with 10 saves, including a save on a header shot by Pitt's Christina Nicassio with under three minutes to play.
The Bearcats will host Georgetown on Friday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. in Gettler Stadium.
