Coach Elliott talks about the start of practice

CINCINNATI - The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team opens preseason practice on Monday (Oct. 4) afternoon in Fifth Third Arena.

Second-year head coach Jamelle Elliott will lead the Bearcats as they prepare for the 2010-11 regular-season opener against Southwest Baptist on Friday, Nov. 12.

Following a 12-18 campaign in 2009-10, the Bearcats will look to improve under their second-year mentor. UC returns three starters and leading returning scorer Shareese Ulis (Toledo, Ohio/Trinity Valley C.C.) will look to improve on her 11.4 points and 3.2 assists per game.

Former BIG EAST all-Freshman team honoree Shelly Bellman (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorf) returns for a sixth season of eligibility after missing the 2009-10 season due to injury. Bellman has averaged 9.4 points and 5.5 rebounds over 77 games in her career.

The Bearcats will welcome six newcomers in 2010-11. Freshmen LaShay Banks (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter), Kayla Cook (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster), Jeanise Randolph (Calumet City, Ill./Thornton Fractional North), and Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) will be joined by transfers Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Michigan) and Bjonee Reaves (San Bernardino, Calif./Neosho County). Hollins will sit out the 2010-11 season due to NCAA transfer guidelines and will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2011-12.

UC opens the 2010-11 season with an exhibition game against Northern Kentucky on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. in Fifth Third Arena. The regular season opener is set for Nov. 12 against Southwest Baptist, an 11 a.m. tipoff and Elementary School Day.
