QUEENS, N.Y. - Nick Weightman (Lanark, Scotland/St. Aiden's) scored the game-winning goal to lead the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team to a 2-0 win at No. 22/nr St. John's on Saturday (Oct. 9) at Belson Stadium.
The Bearcats (5-3-3, 3-0-0 BIG EAST), move to 3-0 in BIG EAST play for the first time since joining the conference in 2005.
"This was a very hard fought win against a very good St. John's team," said head coach Hylton Dayes. "We defended extremely well and scored the goals on counter attacks. Our back four played very well tonight."
In the 24th minute, Weightman took a feed from leading scorer Matt Bahner (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and slid a shot to the far post for his second goal of his senior season.
UC took its 1-0 lead to the lockerroom.
The Bearcats added on early in the second half when Branden Stelmak (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), who led the Bearcats in scoring in each of the last two seasons, scored his first of the season in the 56th minute to push the lead to 2-0.
"Stelmak picked an opportune time to score his first goal of the year," said Dayes. "He played well tonight, holding the ball well and running at the St. John's backs. This was a great way to bounce back from the Michigan loss on Wednesday."
The Bearcats and senior goalkeeper Matt Williams (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) posted a clean sheet for the seventh time through the first 11 matches of the season. Williams lowered his goals-against average to 0.43 in posting his 18th career shutout.
UC improved to 2-4-0 all-time against the Red Storm, with both wins coming at Belson Stadium.
Cincinnati returns home to take on No. 3/3 Louisville on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. in Gettler Stadium.
