SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - After falling behind early, the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals in a 2-1 win at Seton Hall on Saturday (Oct. 16) night at Owen T. Carroll Field.
"We showed excellent character tonight, coming from a goal down to beat a solid Seton Hall team on the road," said head coach Hylton Dayes. "Every BIG EAST game is a battle and tonight was no different."
Despite holding a 10-6 shot advantage in the first half, the Bearcats (6-4-3, 4-1-0 BIG EAST) were behind 1-0 on a Dritan Sela goal in the 22nd minute.
Shamar Shelton (Kingston, Jamaica/St. George's), a sophomore transfer from Lindsey Wilson, scored his first career goal in the 64th minute. Leading scorer Matt Bahner (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) fired a shot and Kevin Bonder made the initial save, but Shelton was there to poke home the rebound to knot the match at 1-1.
The Bearcats continued to apply the pressure and broke through again in the 82nd minute. Bahner tallied his third game-winner of the year with a left-footed blast on a feed from Nick Weightman (Lanark, Scotland/St. Aiden's) for his sixth goal of 2010.
UC outshot Seton Hall (3-9-1, 1-4-0), 21-10, and controlled the play through the second half.
"Our fitness was a factor in the second half and we got a lift from our bench with Shamar Shelton scoring the first goal," Dayes said. "Matt Bahner came up big for us again - as he has all year - with the game-winner."
Matt Williams (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) made four saves in goal for the Bearcats, whose 4-1-0 start in league play is its best since opening the 2005 BIG EAST slate 4-0-2.
UC will return to Gettler Stadium to take on No. 22/25 USF on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m.
