CINCINNATI - Nick Weightman (Lanark, Scotland/St. Aidans) scored the game-tying goal for the University of Cincinnati (6-4-4, 4-1-1 BIG EAST) men's soccer team against No. 19/25 University of South Florida (8-2-4, 3-1-2 BIG EAST) on Wednesday night at Gettler Stadium, but the two squads ended in a 1-1 draw in double overtime.
Weightman's goal, which came in the 48th minute, was the first penalty kick of the 2010 season for the Bearcats and the third goal of the season for the senior forward.
Cincinnati nearly put the match into the victory column after Roger Thompson (Brampton, Ontario/Graceland) blasted a shot inside the penalty box with 15 seconds remaining in the second overtime but USF's Jeff Attinella came up with the save.
The Bulls scored first in the match in the ninth minute. Bernardo Anor served up a cross from the left side to Leston Paul inside the penalty box where Paul was able to settle and knock in a shot on the far side. The Bearcats turned up the offensive pressure after USF's goal, taking the next five shots, including a counter attack that had Branden Stelmack (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) feed Mark Konitsch (Clarence, N.Y/Clarence Senior) who served up Zach Patterson (Mason, Ohio/Mason) inside the penalty box in the 31st minute. Just eight minutes later the Bulls found themselves without their goal-scorer. Paul was ejected from the match with a red card after a flagrant foul on Cincinnati's Stelmack.
Both teams took nine shots in the second half but were unable to punch in a goal. UC rattled off three straight shots in the final 10 minutes, two from Stelmack, but the match ended with the score tied. The first overtime was without a shot and in the second overtime each team had three shots, all unsuccessful.
The Bearcats outshot the Bulls, 22-17 and was edged by USF on corner kicks, 6-3. Matt Williams (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) had nine saves in goal for UC, including a dramatic save on a Ben Sweat shot in the 108th minute.
Cincinnati will play at Villanova next, on Saturday, Oct. 23, in a noon match.
