VILANOVA, Pa. - The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team played Villanova to a 0-0 draw on Saturday (Oct. 23) afternoon at the Villanova Soccer Complex.
The Bearcats (6-4-5, 4-1-2 BIG EAST), locked in a second-place tie with Villanova (8-5-3, 4-1-2) entering the match, outshot Wildcats, 16-12, and created the best chances on the day.
Near the end of the first half, the Bearcats appeared to take a 1-0 lead on an Alex Hadley (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) header, but the goal was disallowed when UC was whistled for a foul off the ball. The teams took a 0-0 tie into the lockerroom.
The Bearcats applied more pressure in the second period, outshooting Villanova, 11-4.
With about 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Tristan Watson (Brampton, Ontario/Lakeland C.C.) hait the crossbar from inside the six-yard box on a bouncing ball that was mishandled by Villanova goalkeeper Chris Bresnehan.
The teams did not conjure much offensive attack in the overtime periods and the Bearcats came up with a point on the road to remain in a second-place tie with the Wildcats on 14 points.
UC locked up a spot in the BIG EAST Championship and assured itself of at least a first-round home game by virtue of finishing in the Top four in the Red Division.
UC goalkeeper Matt Williams (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) made five saves and recorded his eighth shutout of the season, lowering his goals-against average to 0.62 on the season.
The Bearcats wrap up a two-match road swing at DePaul on Oct. 27 before the regular-season finale against Syracuse on Oct. 30.
