Volleyball halts Hoyas in three sets

CINCINNATI - The No. 23-ranked University of Cincinnati volleyball team defeated Georgetown University in three sets (25-10, 25-17, 25-16) on Sunday, Oct. 24, at Fifth Third Arena in an October Breast Cancer Awareness Dig for a Cure match.

The Bearcat defense was stifling throughout the match, holding the Hoyas to a .103 hitting percentage for the match, including a .000 attack rate in the first set. Freshman libero Emily MacIntyre (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) had a team-high 11 digs.

Offensively, senior setter Annie Fesl (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) had a match-high 36 assists and senior outside hitter Stephanie Niemer (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) racked up 17 points on a match-high 13 kills, two service aces and two total blocks.

The first set featured several Cincinnati (20-4, 8-1 BIG EAST) scoring runs, including the final six points to win 25-10. Niemer led the Bearcats with 7.5 points in the set, with sophomore middle blocker Becca Refenes (Westland, Mich./Westland Lutheran) adding 4.5.

Junior outside hitter Missy Harpenau (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) opened the second set with a service ace and the Bearcats never looked back. Defensively, Hapenau also had 10 digs to her credit. UC had a .367 hitting percentage in the second, compared to just a .150 for Georgetown.

With the scored tied 9-9 in the third set, Cincinnati separated from Georgetown by going on multiple runs, with Niemer recording her 13th and final kill of the match to close out the set 25-16.

Fans in attendance donated $476 to University Hospital's Barrett Cancer Center in recognition of the Dig for a Cure match.

Cincinnati hits the road for a non-conference showdown vs. IUPUI on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. before returning home for Senior Day to face BIG EAST Conference foe Villanova on Halloween Sunday, Oct. 31, at Fifth Third Arena at 2 p.m.
