Kim (Vorbroker) Berman, a pioneer for the University of Cincinnati women's soccer program, passed away over the weekend, after a long battle with cancer.
Berman, a member of the 1980 team that squad a 12-2 overall record in its first season as a varsity team, was the chairperson of the women's soccer club organization that submitted the proposal for women's soccer to become a varsity sport at UC.
"Kim was a pioneer for Cincinnati Women's Soccer, a person with tremendous courage and character," said head coach Michelle Salmon.
"Kim is a true Bearcat in every way and represented everything that makes UC so special," Salmon continued. "Her passion to play, her love for the game, her devotion to her teammates and willingness to lead, to pioneer, to push forward when others said it could not be done."
During the 2010 season Cincinnati celebrated its 30-year anniversary of varsity soccer and during the weekend of celebration, Berman returned to UC to watch two matches. She served as the honorary captain in UC's Breast Cancer Awareness match with Cincinnati players wearing pink warm-up shirts dedicated to Berman's fight against cancer.
"Kim represented what it is to be a women's soccer player here at the University of Cincinnati. When we celebrated our 30-year anniversary this past fall, we as program had the opportunity to hear how hard Kim fought to begin our program and for the right to represent our university on the soccer field. There wasn't a player or person who was not impacted by this story and the struggles that Kim battled through in order to have the right to play. We are all truly blessed to have me Kim and we are forever grateful for the lasting impact she has had on our lives," said Salmon.
Berman's funeral service will be on Friday, Nov. 19 at 10 a.m. at the Palm Mortuary - Green Valley in Las Vegas, Nev. Palm Mortuary - Green Valley
