CINCINNATI - Freshman Kayla Cook (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster) scored 15 points and classmate Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) posted a double-double in her first collegiate start, leading the University of Cincinnati women's basketball team to a 65-50 win over Robert Morris on Sunday, Nov. 21, in Fifth Third Arena.
Turner scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in 30 minutes and was joined by Cook and Chanel Chisholm (Long Island, N.Y./Vanderbilt), who scored 13, in double figures.
Cincinnati took a quick lead on the Colonials in the first half, going up 6-0 two minutes into the game with four points coming from Chisholm.
After an RMU (0-3) free throw, Cook nailed a three and Turner hit a layup to give the Bearcats (3-0) a 13-3 lead less than five minutes into the contest.
A layup by Jeanise Randolph (Calumet City, Ill./Thornton Fractional North) pushed UC's lead to 24-9 with 8:30 to play in the half and the lead continued to grow from there.
An 8-0 run late in the half pushed the lead to 24, 39-15, but a three at the buzzer from RMU's Yohanna Morton cut the deficit to 39-18 at the half.
An Artemis Spanou three sparked an 11-0 run midway through the second half that saw the Colonials cut the lead to 13 points, 49-36.
Turner and Cook combined to score seven of the game's next 11 points and UC pushed the lead back to 20 with 5:07 to play.
LaShay Banks (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) knocked down a three for her first collegiate points with 3:30 to play to put the game out of reach at 61-40.
Shareese Ulis (Toledo, Ohio/Trinity Valley C.C.), who entered the game scoring 16.5 points per contest, tallied nine on just 3-of-12 shooting. She did record a game-high six assists. Chisholm added eight rebounds and Daress McClung (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) scored nine points with seven boards.
The Bearcats shot 43 percent for the game, including 53 percent in the first half.
The Bearcats are 3-0 for the first time since opening the 2006-07 season with five straight wins. UC welcomes Mount St. Mary's on Nov. 23 at 7:00 p.m., looking to go to 4-0 on the young season.
