Postgame Interview with S. Bellman
CINCINNATI - Sixth-year senior Shelly Bellman (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorf) scored a game-high 19 points to lead the University of Cincinnati women's basketball team to a 67-47 win against Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday (Nov. 23) evening in Fifth Third Arena.
Bellman, who missed the 2009-10 and 2007-08 seasons due to injury, shot 8-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the three-point line for her highest scoring output since scoring 22 points against Alabama State on Dec. 10, 2006. She also grabbed eight rebounds, her most since pulling down eight boards against IUPUI on Dec. 14, 2008.
Daress McClung (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) tallied a career-high 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting to carry the Bearcats (4-0) to its first 4-0 start since starting the 2006-07 season 5-0.
The Bearcats raced out to a 10-point lead just under eight minutes into the game, keyed by eight points from Bellman.
Mount St. Mary's cut the lead to four, 17-13, with 7:10 to play in the first half, but an 18-2 run pushed the UC lead to 35-15 with 2:43 in the half. After a Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) layup with under 30 seconds to go in the half that made it 39-19, the Mountaineers (1-3) were unable to cut the UC lead to less than 20 the rest of the way.
Cincinnati played with four freshman and junior college transfer Bjonee Reaves (San Bernardino, Calif./Neosho County) on the floor for stretches in the second half and shot 46.2 percent from the floor in the stanza.
UC shot 46 percent for the game and held the Mountaineers to 27 percent shooting, while outrebounding the Mount, 45-32.
Shareese Ulis (Toledo, Ohio/Trinity Valley C.C.) chipped in 11 points and five assists and Turner added 10 points and five boards for the victors.
The Bearcats will head to Valparaiso, Ind., for the first road test of the young season on Sunday, Nov. 28, against Valparaiso at 2:30 p.m. ET.
