VALPARAISO, Ind. - The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team improved to 5-0 for the first time since the 2005-06 season with a 65-51 win at Valparaiso on Sunday, Nov. 28, at the Athletics-Recreation Center.
Shareese Ulis (Toledo, Ohio/Trinity Valley C.C.) scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Bearcats (5-0) to their fifth straight win to open the season. The Bearcats didn't win their fifth game of the 2009-10 season until their 10th game.
The Bearcats opened up a 9-0 lead just over four minutes into the game, with Shelly Bellman (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorf) scoring the first five on a three-pointer and a layup.
A Ulis jumper pushed the lead to 14, 28-14, with 1:51 to go in the first and on UC's next possession, Bjonee Reaves (San Bernardino, Calif./Neosho County) knocked down a three to stretch the margin to 17. A Skyler Gick three made it 31-17 going into the half.
Valparaiso shot just 29 percent in the first half, including 2-for-11 from three, and committed eight turnovers.
Valparaiso (1-4) opened the second half on a 13-3 run to cut the Bearcats lead to four, 34-30. But UC answered with an 18-3 run to push the lead back to 52-33 with 11:00 to play.
Valparaiso got it as close to 13, but the Bearcats held on.
Kayla Cook (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster) matched her career high with 15 points. She was joined in double figures by Bellman and Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), who scored 11 and 10, respectively.
Chanel Chisholm (Long Island, N.Y./Vanderbilt) corralled a game-high 11 rebounds and blocked a career-best four shots.
The Bearcats are next in action on Dec. 2 at Dayton. Tip is set for 7 p.m. in UD Arena.
