CINCINNATI - Shareese Ulis (Toledo, Ohio/Trinity Valley C.C.) scored a game-high 14 points, but the University of Cincinnati women's basketball team dropped a 78-40 decision against Louisville on Wednesday (Dec. 15) night in Fifth Third Arena.
Shelly Bellman (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorf) tallied 11 points and four rebounds for the Bearcats (5-3, 0-1 BIG EAST), who dropped their BIG EAST opener to the Cardinals for the second straight season.
Louisville (8-3, 1-0) scored the first 13 points of the contest before Ulis knocked down a jumper with just under 13 minutes to play in the half. Two Sheronne Vails free throws ballooned the lead to 26-2 with 8:50 left. The Bearcats had 11 turnovers in the first 11 minutes of the game and struggled throughout the first half, shooting just 7-of-22 from the floor in the stanza.
The Cardinals led, 40-17, at the half and did not let up in the second half, pressuring throughout and pushing the lead to as much as 40 at 78-38 with under a minute to play.
Five players scored in double figures for the Cardinals, led by Monique Reid and Becky Burke with 13 apiece. Tia Gibbs added 11 ad Shoni Schimmel and Vails chipped in 10 points each.
Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, tying her career high set on Nov. 21 against Robert Morris.
The Bearcats finished with 31 turnovers and shot just 33 percent for the game.
Cincinnati continues a four-game home stand against Wright State on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m. in Fifth Third Arena.
