DUBAI, United Arab Emrites - Former University of Cincinnati swimmer Josh Schneider set an American record (20.88) and won bronze in the 50-meter freestyle at the FINA World Short Course Championships Friday in Dubai, UAE.
Schneider's time of 20.88 breaks the American Short Course Meters record in the 50 freestyle, held previously by Nathan Adrian, who swam a time of 21.11 in the short course meets' preliminary round.
Short course meets are conducted in a 25-meter pool while a long-course meet would occur in a 50-meter pool.
The event was won by Cesar Cielo (20.51) of Brazil while France's Frederick Bousquet (20.81) placed second. Cielo and Bousquet are currently ranked 1-2 in the world in the short course 50 freestyle event.
Schneider, the 2010 NCAA Champion in the 50-yard freestyle, is training for the 2012 Olympics in London. He closed out his career at UC as a five-time all-America selection, seven-time BIG EAST Conference Champion, two-time BIG EAST Swimmer of the Year, and the holder of five school records (50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 50 fly, and 100 fly).
In his time at UC, Schneider set 22 school-record times and was undefeated in the 50 freestyle during the 2009-10 season.
