CINCINNATI - Shelly Bellman (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorf) scored a game and season-high 22 points, but the University of Cincinnati dropped a 65-50 decision against Wright State on Saturday (Dec. 18) in Fifth Third Arena.
Bellman was the only Bearcat (5-4, 0-1 BIG EAST) in double figures, followed by Shareese Ulis (Toledo, Ohio/Trinity Valley C.C.) with nine points.
Freshman Tiffany Turner (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) scored seven points, hitting her first career three-pointer and grabbing a career-best 14 rebounds.
Four players scored in double figures for the Raiders, led by Courtney Boyd and Maria Bennett, who had 19 and 18, respectively.
LaShawna Thomas and Molly Fox added 11 and 10, respectively, for the Raiders (6-4).
The game was tied at seven early on, but Wright State scored nine straight to take a 16-7 lead with 14 minutes to go in the first. After Bellman tied it at 19 with a layup, the Raiders scored six straight to take a 25-19 advantage.
Three straight baskets for the Bearcats before the half tied it at 25 going into the locker rooms.
Wright State's first seven field goals of the second half were threes with Bennett and Boyd doing the bulk of the damage, hitting three each in the first seven-plus minutes of the half.
All told, Wright State hit on 9-of-18 threes in the second half, while the Bearcats shot just 27 percent in the frame.
The 22 points for Bellman, a sixth-year senior, were the most she scored since pouring in 22 against Alabama State on Dec. 10, 2006.
Cincinnati will take on Marshall on Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 7 p.m. in Fifth Third Arena. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Ohio with Tom Gelehrter and Betsy Ross on the call.
