CINCINNATI - Deonta Vaughn scored 28 points, had four assists and four steals but the University of Dayton (22-12, 8-8 A-10) advanced to the National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals with an 81-66 victory over the University of Cincinnati (19-16, 7-11 BIG EAST) at Fifth Third Arena on Monday night.
Vaughn moved into third place, behind Oscar Robertson and Steve Logan, on UC's all-time scoring list, finishing with 1,885 career points. Lance Stephenson added 13 points for the Bearcats and Ibrahima Thomas grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
The Bearcats led 5-4 when Jaquon Parker hit a 3-pointer with 17:21 to go in the first half, but that would be UC's last lead in the game. The Flyers went on a 16-5 run over the next 6:23 and led, 20-10 with 10:45 on the clock. Dayton continued to land 3-pointers, pushing their lead to 17, 34-17, with 6:52 left in the half. The Bearcats clawed back, using a 19-7 run to close out the half - 11 coming from Vaughn - and trailed by five at intermission, 41-36. The Flyers landed nine three pointers in the first half and outscored UC's bench, 26-6.
Stephenson scored five of UC's first seven points of the second half, and handed out an assist as UC went on a 7-3 run and pulled within one, 44-43. That was as close as the Bearcats would get as the Flyers pushed their lead to 10, 63-53, with 6:27 left in the game. Dayton outscored UC, 20-13 over the final 6:08 and picked up the 81-66 victory.
Dayton outrebounded Cincinnati, 42-34, only the third time in UC's last 10 games that the Bearcats were outrebounded by an opponent. Dayton's bench finished the game with 39 points to UC's nine, and the Flyers ended up with 10 three pointers. Four UD players scored in double figures, led by Marcus Johnson's 16 points and seven rebounds.
