LUTZ, Fla. - The University of Cincinnati men's golf team opened its 2011 spring season at the Match Play this weekend at TPC Tampa Bay.
The Bearcats opened the event with a 2.5-2.5 tie against St. John's, but St. John's advanced on a tiebreaker for winning more holes.
UC then dropped a 3-2 match against host USF and followed with a 2.5-2.5 draw with DePaul. Again, DePaul advanced by winning more holes.
"Overall I was pleased with what we accomplished during this event," said head coach Doug Martin. "Having not competed or been on a golf course since last November, I thought we did some good things."
Senior Joe Kastelic (Newton, N.C./Fred T. Foard) was unbeaten in three matches during the tournament, winning a pair and halving a third. Andrew Desmarais (Union, Ky./Ryle) was 0-1-2 in his three matches.
Kennesaw State won the match play title, defeating Ball State, 3-2.
The Bearcats will travel back to Tampa for the Ron Smith/USF Invitational on March 4-6.
