LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Cincinnati swimming squad was back in action for the preliminaries on day three of the 2011 BIG EAST Conference Championships Friday at the Ralph Wright Natatorium.
Melody Smith had the top UC finish in the women's 400 IM, timing in at 4:37.41 for 22nd position.
Haywood Miller grabbed a spot in the B final of the men's 400 IM. He clocked 4:01.15 to place 12th overall in the preliminaries.
Mike Whipkey placed 26th with his time of 4:14.14 and Nathan Spruill was right behind him in 27th with a time of 4:20.26.
Brittany Groene clocked 56.47 to place 16th in the women's 100 butterfly, grabbing the final spot in tonight's B final. Her time tied for the ninth-fastest in school history.
Laurie Caudy took 19th in 56.76, Kinsey Kowalski placed 20th (56.78), and Alicia Berman was 36th (59.44).
Roberto Nevarez had a season-best clocking of 49.62 to earn the No. 8 seed in the men's 100 butterfly A final this evening.
Daniel Oldham finished 24th with a time of 52.23, Kurt Ramer placed 25th with his effort of 52.23, Robert Walsh took 27th with his 52.30, and Ian Kranbuhl placed 34th in 53.44.
Bailey Laban earned a spot in the women's 200 freestyle B final after clocking 1:52.35 in the prelims.
Katie Nemann placed 23rd with her time of 1:55.80, and Bree Rossi was 27th after swimming 1:57.23.
Nathan Williams placed himself in the B final for the men's 200 freestyle with his effort of 1:40.65.
Stephen Cunningham placed 18th with a time of 1:40.86. Christopher Hale clocked a 1:42.17 to grab 23rd, while Seth Poitinger was 29th (1:44.58), Nate Kramer finished 30th (1:44.93), and Joe Scheerpenberg took 33rd (1:45.28).
Josefin Wede and Sammie Wheeler both qualified for the B final of the women's 100 breaststroke. Wede was 11th in 1:03.55 and Wheeler was 13th in 1:03.74. Wede's time is the second-fastest in school history while Wheeler's is No. 5.
Stephanie Conklin placed 18th in 1:04.41, and Victoria Jacumski too 24th with a time of 1:05.29.
Britton Van Dissel earned a spot in the B final of the men's 100 breaststroke with his time of 57.02.
Miller was 18th with his time of 57.79, and Matt Hargrove was 21st with a 59.38.
Liz Hansson qualified for the A final in the women's 100-yard backstroke, a night after winning the BIG EAST title in the 50 freestyle. She clocked 55.19, breaking her own school record of 55.76.
Erin Frye will start in the B final after placing 12th with her time of 56.59, the fourth-best time in UC history. Anna Bersani took 22nd with her time of 57.68, Weronika Wasiakowska placed 24th (57.99), and Amanda Hardewig was 28th (58.58).
Scherpenberg placed 15th in the 100 backstroke prelims with a time of 51.14 and will swim in the B final this evening. The time is the ninth-fastest in UC history.
Kurt Ramer swam 52.07 to place 21st, Brandon Metzler finished 23rd with his 52.56, and Kranbuhl was 33rd with a time of 56.89.
Action continues at 6 p.m. Friday in Louisville with the finals of the 400-yard IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and the 400-medley relay.
