GREENVILLE, S.C. - In his first start of the season, junior Braden Kline (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw Community) went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, but it was not enough as the University of Cincinnati lost to Charleston Southern University 9-5 Saturday at Fluor Field.
The Bearcats (1-4, 0-0 BIG EAST) took an early lead in the first inning when RF Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) hit a 2-RBI double deep to right field. Two at-bats later, Kline, who started at left field, singled down the right field line to make the score 3-0.
UC was hurt by its defense, which recorded three errors. The biggest came with two outs in the fifth inning that led to four unearned runs to give Charleston Southern (3-4, 0-0 Big South) a 7-3 lead.
With the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, Kline hit an RBI single to left field. Two batters later, 2B Sam Vandenheuvel (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) walked with the bases loaded to bring UC within two runs at 7-5.
Charleston responded by scoring one run in the seventh and eighth innings to put the game away.
Cincinnati plays game three of the First Pitch Invitational vs. Furman at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Fluor Field.
