CINCINNATI - Senior shortstop Chris Peters (Tipp City, Ohio/Tipp City) hit his first home run of the season, but it was not enough as the University of Cincinnati baseball team fell to University of Toledo 7-5 Wednesday at Marge Schott Stadium.
Facing a 7-1 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning, Cincinnati (10-8, 0-0 BIG EAST) scored four runs and recorded hits from five consecutive batters, highlighted by Peters' two-run homer to left field that pulled UC within two runs at 7-5.
The Bearcats, who totaled nine base hits, were unable to score another run after their four-run rally in the seventh.
UC fell behind early after a throwing error, a walk and a catcher's interference loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fourth. Toledo outfielder Andy Mix cleared the bases with a three-RBI double to left field. The three unearned runs put the Bearcats behind 4-0.
Cincinnati puts its first run on the board in the bottom of the sixth when senior outfielder Justin Riddell's (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) fielder's choice allowed Peters to cross home plate, making the score 6-1 Toledo.
Peters finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI to lead Cincinnati. Junior first baseman Nic Spence (Victoria, Australia/St. Joseph's) and freshman OF/DH Justin Glass (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) followed with 2-for-3 performances.
Cincinnati begins BIG EAST play when it travels to Queens, N.Y. to play St. John's University in a three-game series. Game 1 of the series is at 3 p.m. ET Friday at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
