LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team staged a second-half rally but it came up short as the Bearcats fell 18-15 to No. 18 Louisville, Sunday in the BIG EAST Conference opener for both teams at the UofL Lacrosse Complex.
Trailing 13-6 at the break, Cincinnati (2-7, 0-1 BIG EAST) tallied nine second-half goals, including three scores in the final four minutes, coming up just short at the whistle. The 15 goals and nine-second half goals were season bests for UC.
MacKenzie Parsons, Kylie Ramsland, and Laura Simanski all tallied hat tricks on the day. Maddie Fink, Katie Kiriazoglou, Katie Liberatore, Ali Mattingly, Marissa Pierson, and Taylor Young all added single goals. Liberatore added three assists, Kiriazoglou two, and Fink tallied one.
For Simanski, she added to her 12-game scoring streak, which dates back to April 25, 2010. The trio of Parsons, Ramsland, and Simanski put together quite a week, totaling 19 goals in three games.
Parsons scored with 27:53 left in the game to make the margin six at 13-7. A UofL goal pushed it back to seven before Mattingly and Ramsland each scored, making the score 14-9 with 19:55 remaining. UofL would score three of the next four with a goal from Simanski sandwiched between at the 16:58 mark giving the Cardinals a 17-10 lead with 14:26 to go.
A goal by Fink with 11:21 remaining began UC's late rally. Ramsland added a goal at 9:29 to make the score 17-12. After a UofL goal pushed the lead back to six at 18-12 with 7:09 left, Liberatore, Pierson, and Simanski found the back of the net in the final 3:56 to make the final tally 18-15.
UofL's Lianne Bobal finished with a game-high four goals, while Katie Oliverio and Liz Lovejoy had three goals apiece.
The Cardinals had UC in a 3-0 hole less than four minutes into the game after three quick scores. Ramsland's first goal made it 3-1 with 26:15 remaining. After another UofL score, Parsons made it 4-2 with 23:16 left in the half.
Louisville would move the margin to four and keep it there, trading goals with the Bearcats over the next 14 minutes. After Kiriazoglou found the back of the net with 7:46 left, UC was blanked for the rest of the half and UofL added three more scores to take a seven-goal advantage at the half, 13-6.
