Bearcats Top Cleveland State at Athletes in Action Tournament

April 11, 2011

XENIA, Ohio - The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team topped Cleveland State, 2-0, at the Athletes in Action Tournament on Sunday, April 10.

Junior Matt Bahner scored after stealing the ball from a defender and beating the Vikings keeper one-on-one. Matt Asensio tallied his second goal in as many weekends, heading in a cross from Shamar Shelton to put the Bearcats ahead 2-0.

In the second match of the day, UC fell, 1-0, against Bowling Green. The Falcons scored on a header from a free kick opportunity.

The Bearcats then fell, 1-0, against defending national champion Akron. The Zips converted a penalty kick after a UC foul in the box for the lone goal.

"We played well in the first game, creating chances and defending well," said head coach Hylton Dayes. "The second game started well with good possession, but we did not play all that well defensively and the goal was the result of poor marking in the box. The Akron match was back and forth as we created good chances, but their goalkeeper made some good saves."

The Bearcats are next in action on Tuesday, April 12, when they welcome the Dayton Dutch Lions, a USL professional squad, to Gettler Stadium at 7 p.m.
