PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Senior right-hander Dan Jensen (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) pitched nine innings without allowing an earned run, but it was not enough as the University of Cincinnati baseball team fell to Rutgers University 3-2 in 11 innings at Bainton Field.
With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the 11th inning, Rutgers designated hitter Brandon Boykin hit a sacrifice fly off UC reliever Brian Sand (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) to right field that ended the game.
Cincinnati (17-15, 4-6 BIG EAST) fell behind in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, RU second baseman Nick Favatella and Boykin recorded consecutive RBI hits to right field to give the Scarlet Knights a 2-0 lead.
The Bearcats responded in the sixth inning when senior shortstop Chris Peters (Tippy City, Ohio/Tipp City) and sophomore outfielder Jake Proctor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) led off with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, senior outfielder Justin Riddell (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) doubled to right field, allowing Peters and Proctor to score and tying the game at 2-2.
Aggressive base running backfired for UC on multiple occasions after the Bearcats were caught stealing on four occasions, three of which ended the inning.
Cincinnati and Rutgers will play Saturday at 11 a.m. instead of the originally scheduled time of 1 p.m. due to the forecasted weather. Sophomore RHP Andrew Strenge (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) will take the mound for the Bearcats.
