NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team topped Connecticut, 4-0, in the consolation bracket of the 2011 BIG EAST Championship on Friday (April 29) at the Courtney Tennis Center.
The Bearcats, seeded No. 9, earned the doubles point after Lindsey Lonergan and Caitlin O'Gara dispatched of Jennifer Learmonth and Emily Herb, 8-1, and the tandem of Jasmine Lee and Safiyya Ismail topped Alexa Gregoty and Abby McKeon, 8-5. Ksenia Slynko and Ashleigh Witte held a 7-0 lead on Marie Gargiulo and Lucy Nutting before the match was stopped with the point secured.
In singles play, Lee, Witte, and O'Gara each posted wins to secure the victory for the Bearcats. Lee won, 6-0, 6-1, over Herb, while Witte eased past Lauren Wilmarth, 6-1, 6-1. O'Gara, who was UC's lone winner in its opening match of the tournament against Georgetown on Thursday, topped Nutting, 6-3, 6-2.
Cincinnati will take on No. 10-seed St. John's on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the ninth-place match.
