NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision against St. John's on Saturday (April 30) at the BIG EAST Championship, finishing 10th.
In an evenly-matched contest, the Bearcats jumped on top by winning the doubles point. Ksenia Slyko and Ashleigh Witte posted an 8-3 victory, but Lindsey Lonergan and Caitlin O'Gara fell, 8-6, to Nevena Selakovic and Joanna Zwirbulis. Jasmine Lee and Safiyya Ismail earned the point for the Bearcats with a hard-fought 9-7 victory over Jenny Yonkus and Nakita Austin.
St. John's took charge in singles play, winning at the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No.6 spots. Witte defeated Yonkus, 6-2, 6-2, for the lone singles win for the Bearcats.
Slynko forced a tiebreaker in her first set before falling, 6-7, 2-6, to Selakovic. Lee pushed Zwirbulis to three sets, but ultimately fell, 4-6, 6-4, 0-6. Lonergan dropped a 6-7, 3-6 decision to Ece Firat and Caitlin O'Gara fell, 5-7, 1-6, to Ksenia Mikhaylova.
The Bearcats wrap up the 2011 season with a 10-16 record.
