DAYTON, Ohio - Matt Asensio scored an unassisted goal in the second half as the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team defeated Ohio State, 1-0, in the spring opener at the University of Dayton Spring Tournament on Sunday, April 3.
Sophomore goalkeeper Joey Barnard recorded the shutout.
In the second game of Sunday's double-header, the Bearcats dropped a 1-0 decision against Dayton. UD scored with about two minutes left in the game on a free kick.
"Everyone who was eligible and healthy had a chance to play this weekend," said head coach Hylton Dayes. "We played alright for the first time out. Some of our younger players such as Matt Asensio, Danny Mortemore, and Andre Sharpe put on solid performances".
Cincinnati is 1-1 to start the spring season
The Bearcats play again next Sunday, April 10th, when they will play in the Athletes in Action Tournament in Xenia, Ohio. UC will take on Cleveland State, Bowling Green, and defending national champion Akron.
